Constantly putting myself to the test stand is my key to success

Fascinated by scientific contexts, enthusiastic about and interested in all kinds of engineering technology, even beyond his own field of mechanical engineering, Dr Schlimme has found his dream job in the patent attorney profession. Curiosity and a permanent interest in innovations are the driving forces that inspire him every day to be at the forefront of technology.

Even as a schoolboy, he found it more interesting to lie under his plate with the electric model railway and wire the electrics than to just let the trains run in endless loops. Of course, he also had to disassemble (and reassemble in working order) the hub gear of his bicycle out of pure interest. He still pursues his hobby of mechanical work on vehicles to this day, and when his professional life opens up a free window of time, he enjoys working on his classic car – but he much prefers to drive it – even at motorsport events.

Besides technology and the natural sciences, he is also interested in scientific jurisprudence, because the application of law is basically a logical science, like software programming. He has combined his technical specialisation as an aerospace engineer with space law at a scientific level and has written several legal publications in this field, which are already cited in legal commentaries and textbooks.

With such a challenging job, there is not much time left for private activities. The former club handball player still maintains his enthusiasm for this sport, but his downhill skiing and windsurfing escapades of earlier years have given way to more relaxed leisure activities. He still occasionally gets out his racing bike or tennis racket, but what he enjoys most is travelling and getting to know other countries and cultures – and there it is again: curiosity.

 
Technical studies:
  • Studies in mechanical engineering (specialising in aerospace engineering) at the Technical University of Munich (TUM) (German Diplom-Ingenieur)
  • Research in the field of biomedical technology for the purification of breathing air; awarded the title Doctor of Engineering (Dr.-Ing.).
 
Legal studies and practice:
  • Degree in law from the University of Hagen (specialising in European industrial property law) with a Master of Laws (LL.M.)
  • Working in the field of industrial property since 1984 (patent attorney traineeship and professional practice)
  • Training in European patent law at CEIPI, Université Robert Schuman, Strasbourg (France)
  • Harvard mediation training with Bob Mnookin (Harvard Law School) at WIPO in Geneva (Switzerland)
 
Economic studies:
  • Postgraduate studies in business administration and economic science at the Technical University of Munich (TUM) (MBA in Industrial Engineering)
  • Executive studies in management at the University of Augsburg with a focus on strategic planning.
 
Technical professional practice:
  • German Air Force, maintenance and repair base
  • Institute for Biomedical Engineering, Munich (development of Venturi scrubber)
