One of the technical focuses of our office is the field of aerospace technology. As a doctor of engineering specializing in aerospace technology, patent attorney Dr. Wolfram Schlimme has not only dealt with a large number of inventions in this field, but also with legal issues relating to patent protection in outer space. His practical experience as an engineer in flight tests and in zero gravity supports his theoretical understanding of this technology. His engineering background also included aeronautical medicine. He later spent many years working as a patent attorney in the practical fields of aeronautical, space and defence technology.

He has also specialized in international space law and has written several jurisprudential publications on the patent protection of space-related inventions and in extraterritorial areas. Dr. Schlimme is a member of the International Institute of Space Law (IISL).

There is no internationally recognized space patent, i.e. a space patent that is effective in outer space, which is not subject to the national laws of individual states, although there have been many calls for such a space patent in the professional literature.

Consequently, in practice, a national or regional patent application with a space-related aspect must be designed and the patent claims must be drafted in such a way that the practical use of the invention in space is protected to the maximum possible extent by terrestrial laws.

More information on patent protection in extraterritorial regions in outer space and at sea can be found here.
